vernon's mud (2000)

this is what i miss (listen)
take it with you when you go
nina and henriette
girl named mae
the puerto rico song
goliath
stay away girl
faith never sleeps
she talks of family
work the change
sounds like a promise
you, mother and child
vernon's mud

this is what i miss
this is what i miss
this is what i miss
i miss time with you
nothing else will do
this is what i miss

this is what i want
this is what i want
i wanna live and tell
love and laugh like hell
forget all that stuff i said
i must have hit my head
this is what i want
this is what i want

and i'm not going to pretend
there's nothing harder than the truth
“wise men change their minds
fools never do”

this is what i am
this is what i am
and though i have many sides
there's none more real - there's none more mine
could you hang around while i work this out?
'cause this is what i am
this is what i am

this is what i want

this is what i miss

take it with you when you go
philip said, "it's great to see you again -
i get so used to us just goofing around -
so that when one of us must leave -
i find myself shaking like a junkie”
i told him to

hold on to that feeling
take it with you when you go

cindy's grandma died late last year
nothin's as tough as losing your best friend (amen)
she said she really has no regrets
everyday she thanks her God
for treasured memories
i told her to

hold on to that feeling…

forget your money
leave your things
any recognition
will be useless then

hold on to that feeling…

nina and henriette
it must have been two summers ago
the whole town was a freakin' out
everybody wanted to know
what the two new girls were all about
nina had the reddish-brown hair
henriette was slightly taller - she was way too blonde
yeah their last name should have been "truth"
i'm talkin' that kind of beauty - i mean pretty as the dawn
those two girls shared a special glow
life's own bond - it couldn't be undone
two sisters in love like you read about
unconditional love going on and on and on and on

nina and henriette - the two prettiest girls that you ever did see
nina and henriette - just as pretty on the inside believe you me

for a month or so they stayed in town
at a bed and breakfast ms. polly would run
the day they bought ole' man daugherty's farm
the older folks around franklin thought the kingdom done come
what the heck were they doing here
and why on earth did they choose this place
what did they do for a living and where did they get all their money from?
yeah the questions and the rumors were flyin' around at a crazy pace

nina and henriette…

i must admit i was a curious soul myself
and nothin' beats a little first hand news
i bumped into henriette at the waterin' hole
and a couple drinks later i got to thinkin' to myself i got nothin' to lose
i said, "girl what you doin' here"
"and why on earth would you choose this place"
"what do you do for a livin' and where did you get all your money from"
she handed me a bar-stool and she looked me in the face
she said, "we've come to watch the grasses grow"
"we've come to breathe the country air"
"in the big city where we're from"
"there ain't a whole lotta livin' goin' on 'round there”

nina and henriette…

you see their mommy and their daddy done died
but daddy had put a little money away
they started readin' 'bout organic farms
and it weren't no pie in the sky - it was a dream come true
they were here to stay
and neither girl was thinkin' 'bout a man
'cause life is more than a wedding ring
whenever anybody asked it was "oh, i don’t' know"
"perhaps maybe, someday"
for two girls living for a living there'd be
plenty of time for that sort of thing

nina and henriette…

girl named mae
i'm lookin' for a girl named mae
she's just the right height and the perfect weight
smooth, soft and beautiful
she'll love me 'til the day i die

i'm thinking of a certain girl
she's in my mind is she in this world
quick, smart and disciplined
gets going when the going gets tough

i smile just when i picture mae
'cause she always knows just what to say
with wit, charm and charisma
she entertains me night and day

ooh my mae

i'm prayin' that my princess comes
into my life - warm me like the sun
selfless and spiritual
an angel sent from heaven above

i'm lookin' for a girl named mae
i'm lookin' for a girl named mae
tell me - have you seen my mae?

the puerto rico song
there's a girl around the corner
she's on fire inside
she feels so heavy
she is weighed down
big decisions in her life

she knows that everything is gonna be alright

there's this man from another planet
he is worried - he's got the big disease
he's taking pictures - he's writin' letters
to the angels he hopes he sees

he knows that everything is gonna be alright

i know two people - once together
now finishing touches on new lives
there are no short cuts to forgiveness
it begins outward and ends inside

they know that everything is gonna be alright

goliath
i can throw this ball
i know i can
i've seen it done
with even my own hands
my own hands
i did it best when i didn't know
what happens when you overthrow
it makes you think and those thoughts turn to doubts
and yet doubting ain't what winning's about
it's about

it's about time i named you problem

and if i call you goliath
then you would call me david

i can bend this string
i know i can
hell i use to blow
like the best of hands
back when i was a kid still waiting on fame
more than innocence - i knew my place
but i've moved since then and i'm afraid of it now
and yet fear ain't what expression's about
it's about

it's about time i named you problem

and if i call you goliath…

i'm gathering rocks and slings
i'm putting my fingers to the seams
i'm learning to play over anything
i'm gathering rocks and slings

i can throw this ball
and i can bend this string
i know i can - i know i can

'cause i'm gathering rocks and slings

i'm gonna call you goliath…

stay away girl
hey hey - my little stay away girl
when you gonna come see me?
hey hey - my little stay away girl
every one of your cuts bleeds me

bleeds me

hey hey - my little stay away girl
when you gonna come kiss me?
hey hey- my little stay away girl
i bet you don’t ever miss me

miss me

hey hey - my little stay away girl
i wonder what do you think of me
hey hey - my little stay away girl
do you think that you could love me
really love me?

love me

faith never sleeps
i don't remember ever feeling so down
when was the last time i looked up
and waved goodbye to rude clouds that had out-welcomed their stay
too dark, too loud, too full of rain?

my times right now they are tough
i must not be prayin' enough
i'm gonna hold on to what i believe
faith rests but it never sleeps

i look around me and all i see is a haze
i wonder what it would take to make things more clear
enough to see when good times could again come my way
too much, too soon, too fast? - no way

my times right now they are tough…

there's a part of me that is never afraid
i'm not about to lose what i need the most
my eyes awaken to the hope of a brand new day
a little slap of the mettle and then i'm on my way

my times right now they are tough…

she talks of family
she smiles during hurricanes
says it God testing us again
her daddy told her it was so
and daddy, like mommy, knows best
daddy taught her it was true
how every little thing you do
winds its way back around
and lifts you either up or down
then

she talks of family like some
talk of eisenhower
like it's all she knows
she talks of family like i
talk of f.d.r.
like some kind of hero

her great-grandpa worked at sea
accepted adversity
learned to use it like a tool
like a piano or a school book
great-grandpa handed down his trade
and what little money he had saved
and while confidence cannot be bought
and while confidence cannot be taught
it was learned

she talks of family…

like she's got something to believe in
like she's got something to hold onto
and it's bigger than it is
so much bigger than it is

she wipes her little boy's face
and sends him back out to play
with a band-aid on his chin
and some Girl Scout cookies for his friends
to share

he talks of family…

work the change
it ain't rained much
so if the grass is growin' it must be growin' slow
the paint is probably fadin' - hell i don't know
i'm just sittin' around and wonderin'
and ain't it just like me to sit around and wait and wonder

but sittin' and waitin' for a change to come
sure won't make the change happen any faster
instead of waitin' for a change to come
i've got to go ahead and work the change

i'm bored alright
i'm tired of a routine and it's tired of me
i need more than a temporary change of scenery
more than a brand new team
hand me the phone - get me the fbi
i need a new identity

'cause sittin' and waitin' for a change to come…

sounds like a promise
she woke up from a dream she was having
somethin' 'bout chefs on t.v.
felt beside her and he was gone
ain't not tellin' when that busy boy would make it back home

but come home he will do believe it
as sure as a hungry cats' meow
another time, some other place there may have been room for doubts
but now's there way too much love in that old house

he comes in smilin' and says

i'm gonna need you - i'm gonna love you
until the angels take me away
i'm gonna be here - right beside you forever
if that sounds like a promise
if that sounds like a promise
darling it is

love is like life - it's what you make it
the more you read the more you might know
but knowledge alone never drove one single nail
you've gotta work on love like it's your very own home
with hearts and minds and souls as tools
workin' it day by day
we'll focus on us
it's happiness or bust
a little patience and forgiveness still go a long, long way

we just need dirty hands and calluses he says

i'm gonna need you…

now and again the past will flicker
like a flame from a candle in their minds
it serves them well
they use it to tell
how tall their love has grown in time

taller than mountains - higher than any mountain and she says

i'm gonna need you…

you, mother and child
i've almost the feeling that i don't belong here
it's like i'm listening in on another's prayers
today i am lucky
call me the awestruck witness
to woman and child - both laughing - in sunset tongues

and at first it's "why me Lord?"
but then "thank you Father"

i know something the angels don't
i know the shortest distance between two hearts
it's you mother and child

He colored you gorgeous
innocent - snow white - perfect
yeah you are perfection like rain is water is wet
the omni-dependence
travels in a circular motion
he's sneezing out carrots to make way for peaches and spoon

and at first it's "why me Lord?"..

i know something the angels don't…

"why me Lord?"…

i know something the angels don't…

vernon's mud
vernon's mud is better than mine
vernon's mud is perfect every time
vernon's mud is like a sweet red wine to the bricklayers
as they're burnin' up the line

he's a tall, strong, black man
with long, wide, soft hands
at 49 he works at his own pace
he's subject to drink too much and maybe miss a day
he was married for 13 years 'til his ole' woman up and went away
you can say what you want - say what you will
but vernon pulls his own weight

vernon's mud is better than mine…

sometimes the forklift breaks down
vernon cracks a smile and starts jokin' around
and says something like, "better warm up your shoulders little girl-scouts -
we gotta break out the hods -
unless you know a good rain dance or a prayer for the forklift gods -
it's the same shit - different day”
but there's so much to be said for an honest man earning honest pay
hell yeah

vernon's mud is better than mine…
